THE DIGEST: Belfast in Brief

🚢 Titanic returns to Belfast… in light
For a few haunting minutes this week, Belfast Harbour looked like it had travelled back in time to bring back the RMS Titanic.
If you missed it, this is one of those “wish you were there” moments.
Within seconds, nearly 1,000 drones rose silently into the night sky and formed the full-scale outline of the ship. Every detail from the hull to the towering masts appeared suspended above the water, glowing against the darkness.
The moment was timed precisely. At around 8pm, the exact hour the Titanic left Belfast on April 2, 1912, the illuminated ship “set sail” once again, this time as part of a BBC anniversary tribute.
What made it unforgettable was the movement.
The glowing outline drifted slowly across the harbour, its reflection shimmering on the water below. Viewers described it as looking like a “ghost ship”, with many calling it both beautiful and eerie.
The tribute was created using 950 drones and inspired by a recent documentary on the Titanic’s final hours. It formed part of the BBC’s Made Of Here series and was filmed earlier in the week before airing on April 3.
Even the Titanic Belfast museum praised the display, calling it a “striking tribute” that brought the ship back to the city where it was built.
Online, the reaction was instant.
People spoke about the accuracy of the design, the scale of the ship recreated in light, and the emotional weight of seeing such an iconic piece of Belfast history reimagined in such a modern way.
This is Belfast at its best. Turning history into something people actually feel again.
The exhibition wasn't displayed publicly but as Insiders, we give you a chance to watch it here. It’s a reminder of how powerful Belfast’s story still is.
Did you see the Titanic in the sky?
🧵 Belfast is rebuilding its identity… with linen
Once known as Linenopolis, the city built its wealth on linen. Now, decades after its collapse, a new wave of designers, farmers, and global fashion players are bringing it back. This time, it's rooted in sustainability, modern design, and global ambition. The world is noticing.
From boutiques in the Cathedral Quarter to regenerative flax farms across Northern Ireland, the revival is happening end-to-end. Designers are reimagining linen with contemporary aesthetics, while farmers are restoring traditional production methods to create higher-quality, longer-lasting fabric.
The movement is gaining serious traction. Links to global fashion houses like Alexander McQueen and interest from Catherine, Princess of Wales are pushing Belfast back onto the global fashion map (The Guardian).
Belfast isn’t just bringing linen back. It’s repositioning itself on the global stage.
More than fashion, this is about perception.
Linen is becoming a symbol of a new Belfast. Creative, confident, and globally relevant. This is one of the few industries where Belfast still has real global leverage. If Belfast gets this right, linen could become what tech is to Dublin, a global calling card.
🤝 Northern Ireland just made UK history… supporting parents through loss
Northern Ireland has become the first region in the UK and Ireland to introduce paid leave for miscarriage (Belfast Telegraph).
From this week, parents who experience a miscarriage can take up to two weeks off work with statutory pay, regardless of how early the pregnancy loss occurs. Previously, support was only available in cases like stillbirth after 24 weeks.
This sets a new standard. Northern Ireland just moved ahead of the rest of the UK.
Around 9,000 employees in Northern Ireland are affected each year. Both partners are eligible, and the leave can be taken flexibly without medical proof.
But what makes this change powerful is the real stories behind it.
Women across Northern Ireland have spoken about being forced to take sick leave while grieving. One mother described miscarrying at her desk. Another said she returned to work the same day as a hospital procedure because there was no formal support.
This new policy changes that.
By classifying miscarriage as bereavement leave, it formally recognises the emotional and physical impact of pregnancy loss. It removes stigma, gives families space to grieve, and acknowledges something many felt was previously ignored.
Organisations like TinyLife and Sands have welcomed the move, calling it a major step forward for compassion in the workplace.
More support could follow. Proposed updates in the Good Jobs Bill aim to expand parental rights further, including neonatal care leave and improved paternity benefits.
This will directly affect thousands of families across Northern Ireland every year.
Should the rest of the UK follow this?

🌮 Taco Bell is finally coming to Northern Ireland
A major US fast food brand is about to land in NI for the first time (Belfast Telegraph).
This isn’t just about fast food. It’s a signal that global brands are betting on Northern Ireland.
Taco Bell is set to open its first Northern Ireland location at the Applegreen Lisburn South service station.
The site is already teasing the launch with signs that read “Crunchy. Cheesy. Spicy.” and call it “coming in hot.” When it opens, it will mark the brand’s official entry into the Northern Ireland market.
This move builds on Applegreen’s strategy of bringing major American chains to NI, following earlier partnerships with brands like Chick-fil-A.
While Taco Bell has already expanded across Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland, this is the first time Northern Ireland gets a piece of it. Big-name brands entering NI signal growing consumer demand and a more global food scene. More global brands usually mean more choice, more jobs, and a more competitive food scene.
Will you try Taco Bell when it opens?
🍜 Ragin’ Ramen is expanding in Belfast
Ragin’ Ramen is opening a second city centre location.
New signage has been spotted on Ann Street, taking over the former Trespass unit. The brand, known for its “Japanese ramen with a Belfast twist”, first launched on Church Lane in 2022.
When local brands start expanding, you know the market is working. No word yet on whether the original location will stay open. More locations usually mean shorter queues and a stronger local food scene.
Belfast’s food scene isn’t emerging anymore. It’s accelerating.

💛 COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Brainjam Belfast

If you’ve been looking to meet new people in Belfast without the usual “just drinks” format, this might be for you.
A local couple have been quietly building Brainjam Belfast. It’s a community built around activities, not alcohol.
Their goal is simple. Create a relaxed, welcoming space where people can connect through shared interests.
They run:
Weekly social chess at The Sunflower
Monthly meetups like climbing, sketching, pool, and Rubik’s Cube sessions
Seasonal outdoor events planned for summer like picnics, park painting, and juggling
Everything is designed to be low-pressure. No skill required. No ego. Just show up and take part.
The vibe is intentional.
No intimidation and all levels are welcome.
It’s as much about conversation as it is about the activity. A space where both men and women can feel comfortable joining solo and leaving with new connections. The kind of community that Belfast needs more of.

🍽️ Foodie Finds
Wing Society, Lisburn Road
This week’s foodie find comes via Belfast food creator Nasti, whose recent review has helped put Wing Society firmly on the radar.
This week’s foodie find comes via Belfast food creator Nasti, whose recent review has helped put Wing Society firmly on the radar.
Wing Society is gaining traction for pushing comfort food into over-the-top territory.
Think loaded fries, oversized tenders, and a heavy rotation of sauces. Ranch. Buffalo. Peri mayo. The kind of place where extra sauce feels mandatory, not optional.
The standout items:
Nashville mozzarella sticks
A stacked burger loaded with onion rings, mozzarella, and buffalo sauce that’s already being called a “slobber locker” online
Early verdict from TikTok: 9.6/10 (via Nasti’s review on TikTok)

Why it hits
This isn’t just another wing spot.
It reflects where Belfast food culture is moving next: louder flavours, bigger portions, and places built for social media as much as appetite.
Belfast’s food scene isn’t evolving slowly anymore. It’s accelerating.
