BELFAST INSIDER

Hi Insider 👋,

I hope you're alright.

Belfast is stepping into its biggest event cycle in years.

From the Belfast Marathon happening early next month to the 100-boat-capacity GP14 World Championship set for Belfast Lough, and other major moments like Fleadh Cheoil na héireann lined up, the city is gearing up for a summer filled with movement, tourism and a real economic upside.

We've been tracking the pattern for months.

What it means is simple.

More visitors coming into the city translates into more spending in the local economy and more visibility for businesses.

Belfast looks ready. Are you?

Here are a few things you may have missed.

No Crime. No Politics. Just the Good Craic.

THE DIGEST: Belfast in Brief

Belfast's Harbour Just Got an Upgrade

Belfast Harbour Marina has just reopened following a major refurbishment.

The marina now offers 67 berths, up from 60, with extended pontoons and upgraded infrastructure supporting year-round use. It also secured its first Blue Flag accreditation in 2025, a recognised standard for environmental standards and facilities.

This strengthens Belfast's position as a maritime destination for leisure and event traffic.

The Harbour will also support the GP14 World Championship set for August 8–14 and hosted by the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club.

Expect international sailors, global attention, and a high-visibility regatta arriving at a newly upgraded waterfront.

Is Belfast doing enough to maximise its waterfront potential, or is this just the beginning?

How Northern Ireland Has Changed in 100 Years

New analysis from the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency shows how dramatically Northern Ireland has evolved since 1926.

Population has grown by 51% over the past century. Society is older, more diverse, and more urbanised. Household sizes have dropped to 2.4 on average.

County Derry/Londonderry led growth at +81 percent, followed by Armagh at +77 percent, while Antrim grew by 32 percent.

The proportion of residents born outside the UK and Ireland has increased tenfold.

Belfast's growth story is a result of a long shift toward urban concentration, education, and economic diversification.

What change stands out most to you? Growth, diversity, or lifestyle shifts?

Fleadh Cheoil Brings Major Trading Opportunity For Local Businesses

This summer's Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is shaping up to be one of the biggest economic moments Belfast has hosted in years.

Over 800,000 visitors are expected.

Key developments include:

  • Pedestrianisation of city centre areas

  • A Food Village at St Anne’s Cathedral

  • Extended trading at St George’s Market

  • New street trading pitches across High Street, Royal Avenue and Bridge Street

From pop-ups to expanding existing premises, there are multiple entry points. The council is actively supporting businesses with licensing and setup guidance.

Applications opened April 20.

Belfast is moving from an events city to an experience economy.

If you had a stall, what would you sell?

🏪 LOCAL BUSINESS SCOOP

Taco Bell Is Landing In Northern Ireland

The first-ever Taco Bell in Northern Ireland is set to open within weeks at the Applegreen service station on the M1 in Lisburn.

This signals continued confidence from global brands in the Belfast commuter belt.

Applegreen is doubling down on destination service stations that combine convenience with branded food experiences.

We've seen this before. One flagship. Then expansion if demand hits.

With brands like Wingstop already entering the market, the question is not if more will come. It is who comes next.

Who should be next into Belfast. Shake Shack, or something else?

💛 COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

A Lifetime of Service

Mr Thomas Doherty, photo credit: Lisburn & Castlereagh Council

Thomas Doherty has been doing his bit since before most of us were born.

The East Belfast native, seventh of ten children, RAF veteran, survivor of the Belfast Blitz, has just been awarded the Freedom of the City by Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council. He is 99 years old.

His RAF service took him from Northern Ireland to England, Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia, driving aircrew, equipment and vital supplies as a corporal in the mechanical transport section. Three of his brothers served alongside him in the armed forces.

Back home, he built a life in Castlereagh with his wife Edna, nearly 80 years of marriage until her passing in 2025. He raised three children, led the Temple in Bloom initiative to bring colour to his local area, fundraised for local charities, and continued showing up for Remembrance Sunday well into his 99th year.

When asked about the honour, Tommy kept it simple.

"I have always tried to do my bit."

Belfast's growth story is not just about what's next. It is also about the people who carried it through.

What does community impact look like today and who should we feature next?
