BELFAST INSIDER

April 16th - 22nd 2026

Hey Insider! 👋

If you were stuck behind a tractor in traffic on the Sydenham Bypass on Tuesday, you weren’t alone.

Fuel protests brought convoys of farmers and hauliers onto Belfast’s roads, causing tailbacks across the city and beyond. The frustration is real, and the debate is loud, but we’ll leave that to the other lads.

We just hope things ease up soon as everyone is feeling the cost-of-living pinch.

Right.

Here’s what’s been happening around Belfast this week →

THE DIGEST: Belfast in Brief

🍺 Lidl’s Pub Is Actually Happening in Dundonald (Here’s what we know)

We’ve been hearing about this for a while. Now it’s actually happening.

Dundonald is getting the UK’s first-ever Lidl pub this summer. It still sounds completely mental.

According to Time Out, Lidl couldn’t get a standard licence to sell alcohol at its store. So instead of taking the loss, they made a move and built a pub next door.

The pub licence comes with the legal right to run an off-sales section too. They get what they wanted anyway.

Six years of planning. A High Court battle. Sixty seats. Perlenbacher on tap.

Only in Belfast does this actually make sense.

So here’s the question. If a player like Lidl enters the pub game, even on a small scale, does it put any pressure on prices? Or is this just a novelty spot that changes nothing?

Are you expecting cheaper pints, or just curious to try it once?

🎟️The SSE Arena Is Becoming The O2 Belfast

If you’ve got tickets to anything at the SSE Arena, take note.

From 1 July 2026, it will become The O2 Belfast.

Virgin Media O2 has signed a 10-year naming rights deal with The Odyssey Trust.

The deal will see a new Blueroom VIP space added to the arena, and the Belfast Giants are now sponsored by the O2.

O2 customers also get priority access to tickets.

Same arena. Better perks if you’re in the club.

Does this actually improve the experience, or is it just a rebrand?

🏡 Windsor Is Still Belfast’s Busiest Postcode Right Now

No surprises that BT9 still dominates on price.

Now it’s backing that up with activity too.

The latest report shows Windsor, which sits in BT9, recorded the highest number of home sales in February.

According to PropertyPal, 23 homes sold there in a single month. Central followed with 21. Sydenham with 18.

Across Northern Ireland, the average house price is now £240,758. Up 5.2 percent year-on-year. Average rent has crossed £1,000 a month.

The NI property market is not cooling. It is tightening.

If money was no object, where in Belfast are you buying?

🏪 LOCAL BUSINESS SCOOP

Openings, Closures & Buzz Around Town

🍕 Flout Pizza Opens City Centre Spot

Flout! Pizza is stepping into the city centre this Friday at 12pm.

After blowing up online and building a loyal following on the Newtownards Road, Flout! is moving into Belfast’s busiest food district with serious momentum.

What made them blow up? A fully visible slice counter that rotates all day. No pre-baking. Ever. Fresh slices. Daily toppings. Everything made in front of you.
This is how local brands scale. Build cult demand first. Then move central.

Expect queues.
From Newtownards Road to Cathedral Quarter. That’s a serious upgrade.

Be honest. Are you queuing day one or waiting for the hype to settle?

💸 £2,000 Grants Available for Young NI Founders

If you got £2,000 today, how would you spend it on your business? SWEF Enterprise Fund is offering up to £2,000 to young entrepreneurs already building something.

Delivered with Community Foundation Northern Ireland, the grant can be used for equipment, stock, product development, or getting your business properly set up.

This is for builders, not dreamers. You need traction for this, not just an idea.

For early founders, £2,000 can unlock the next stage. Inventory, tools or systems that move the needle.

Small money? Big leverage if you use it right.

Forward this to someone who needs it.

🍽️ Foodie Finds

🍗 Fowl Play, Ballyhackamore

There's no shortage of fried chicken spots opening across Belfast right now but according to @belfastfoodiegirl on TikTok, Fowl Play is one worth your time and money.

They've just opened a new spot in Ballyhackamore, adding to their existing location at Halt, Weaverscross. And this week, they launched a brand-new menu with some Asian-inspired flavours thrown into the mix.

Must try: The Sichuan Sando, a hefty chicken burger loaded with Kung Pao buffalo sauce and miso aioli. Or the Sriracha maple chicken and waffles, which apparently went down a storm.

But the real value play? The Bucket. £28 gets you four tenders, six wings, four Nashville corn ribs, skin-on fries, two dips, and a bowl of mac and cheese. Feeds two people comfortably.

Wing flavours to choose from: Classic Buffalo, Chipotle Barbecue, and Carolina Reaper Buffalo if you're feeling brave.

📍Ballyhackamore | Also at Halt, Weavers Cross
