It's been one of those weeks where the good stuff actually got a word in. The city's rolling up its sleeves for the biggest party it's ever hosted, a west Belfast family got the news they'd waited nine years to hear, and yes... we've got to talk about your electricity bill. We'll keep it brief.

🎻 The countdown's on and Belfast's getting the kettle on for 800,000 guests
Two weeks out and it's starting to feel real. Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann rolls into Belfast on 2 August, the first time in the festival's history that the city's hosted it, and this week, the talk shifted from "is this actually happening" to "right, what do we do with it?
Businesses across the city have spent the week getting ready. Window displays. Extra stock. Longer opening hours. Because when 800,000 visitors are expected over eight days, you don't leave things until the last minute.
The music matters, of course. But what's just as interesting is watching Belfast get ready. Streets you know are about to fill with music, visitors and the sort of atmosphere you normally have to leave the country to find.

❤️ Dáithí got his wee heart
Nine years. That's how long Dáithí Mac Gabhann from west Belfast waited for a transplant. This week, he got one.
His dad Máirtín described the first signs after surgery; warm hands, warm feet, colour in his face that was never there before. Small things. Which, somehow, are everything.
Dáithí's family spent years campaigning to change how organ donation works here, and the law now carries his name. This week wasn't really about legislation, though. It was about a nine-year-old Liverpool fan getting a second chance, and a city that's been quietly rooting for him since before most of us can remember.
Early days yet. But it's a good news week, and this is the best of it.

💡 Your bills, explained
Two bits of money news worth knowing before the weekend.
First, households across Great Britain are getting VAT knocked off their electricity bills from October, saving the average home around £45 over six months. Northern Ireland won't get that discount because of our post-Brexit VAT rules. Instead, Stormont will receive a lump sum to spend on cost-of-living support, although there's still no word on when, or how, that money will reach households.
Then there's home insurance. If your renewal's landing soon, don't just accept the first quote. Homeowners here are still paying some of the highest premiums in the UK. Households in Newry, Mourne and Down are paying more than £800 a year on average, while even the cheapest area in Northern Ireland is still more expensive than anywhere in Great Britain.
Different stories. Same takeaway. It might be worth giving your household bills a second look before autumn rolls around.

Openings, Closures & Buzz Around Town
🍫 Taste of Belgium has closed its doors
Two years after it landed in CastleCourt, Taste of Belgium has shut up shop. If you were ever queuing for one of those Dubai chocolate strawberries or a proper Belgian hot chocolate, you'll know why this one stung a bit more than your average closure — it had a proper following. The team's parting message was short and warm: thanks for every order, every smile, every kind word. No reason given for the closure, and the business is now in liquidation.
It followed a path plenty of Belfast favourites have; big buzz, a loyal crowd, and then a quiet final post. Worth raising a coffee to.
Another reminder that even places with queues out the door aren't guaranteed to last.

🛍️ Trademarket has closed its doors but it's not goodbye
Trademarket Belfast played its last weekend at its current home on Sunday 14 July, and the team behind it were upfront that they haven't found a new site yet. What they were clear on is that this isn't the end, just a pause while they work on finding somewhere new to land.
Their message was simple: thanks for backing the traders, and please keep supporting them wherever they pop up next.

🧹Making a Difference, One Sign at a Time in Ballygowan
If you’ve driven the Ballygowan Road recently, you might have noticed one 30mph sign looking a lot brighter than the rest.
Local man behind M&M Services was working in Ballygowan when a filthy, algae-covered speed sign caught his eye. So he pulled over, grabbed a sprayer and brush, and cleaned it.
“I’ve been doing this for over 5 years and never received any payment. This is all done in my spare time and at my business expense,” he wrote after his video blew up with lovely comments.
He’s not a contractor for DfI. He does it voluntarily. His reason is simple: “If it makes a small difference in preventing an accident or potentially saving a life...”
With budget pressures affecting routine maintenance, many road signs across Northern Ireland are left to fade into the hedgerows. Such a small act with a big impact; a clearer sign means a safer road. This is a reminder that community pride is still very much alive.

🍽️ RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK
🥐 Bread Street, Boucher Road
Bread Street has just opened a third location on Boucher road, and it's big enough to actually sit in, which isn't always a given with a bakery. They’re doing all the classics well: pain au chocolat, cinnamon rolls, almond croissants, plus a Nutella swirl that comes out properly crispy and flaky with the Nutella running right through it.
The one to get is the 99-inspired cruffin: cream, raspberry jam and a chocolate flake on top. Fair warning: it's a two-hands-and-a-napkin situation, not a walk-and-eat one.
On the savoury side, the hot honey, brie and bacon pastry got a rare 10/10 from our taste-tester's other half, which apparently doesn't happen often. The egg and spinach sandwich was fine but a touch dry, so maybe save your appetite for the sweet stuff.
They've also got trufru in stock if you're into that, a proper bread selection to take home, and a peach iced tea worth trying at £2.50. The coffee does the job. You're really here for the pastries.

🧭 AS SPOTTED
The team at Best Bark reckon they've found the most dog-friendly street in Belfast. They took a wee pug for a walk and counted 18 dog-friendly spots along the way.
Can you guess the street? It's the Ormeau Road.
