BELFAST INSIDER
Hi insider 👋
Welcome to all our new subscribers.
Belfast doesn’t stand still; it quietly shifts. This week, we’re looking at wee signs that point to bigger changes across the city: more shops going cashless, emergency services under pressure and more global brands choosing Belfast.
We’re also looking at local people holding communities together in ways that rarely make the headlines. Plus we’ve pulled together what’s actually worth doing between January 15th and 21st (from sold-out arenas to low-key meet-ups plus a food spot that lives up to the hype).
Whether you live here, run a business, or just want to keep a finger on the city’s pulse, here’s what you need to know this week. Belfast Insider is a weekly look at what’s actually happening in the city without the noise.

THE DIGEST: Belfast in Brief

💳 Ever notice how many Belfast businesses won't take cash anymore?
From major chains to local independents, more businesses are putting up “contactless only” signs as tapping to pay becomes the norm. A new Belfast Live series is digging into what’s driving the shift, from post-pandemic habits to bank branch closures and rising security concerns.
Northern Ireland has long been the UK’s most cash-reliant region with an average £2,274 withdrawn per person in 2024 but that’s quickly changing . For some, it’s pure convenience. For older residents and rural communities, it raises real questions about access and choice as the city moves away from cash.
Are you happy to see Belfast go cashless, or do you still prefer carrying notes?
🚑 Before You Call 999
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service says it’s having a particularly busy spell, with crews stretched across the region this week. They’re focusing on the most serious, life-threatening emergencies, which means some people may face longer waits than usual.
If it’s something minor, your GP, local pharmacy or the out-of-hours service might be the quickest route. But if someone’s in real danger, always call 999. A little patience and the right choice can help make sure help gets to those who need it most.

Brendan Mulhall is our Hero of the Week

Photo: Belfast Live
Meet Brendan Mulhall, the 81-year-old "super-fixer" from Downpatrick who can repair just about anything from antique clocks to children's toys. Brendan's been tinkering since he was 10, learning from his dad. After a career as an electrician on ships, he's now channelling those skills into something bigger. For the past seven years, he's been volunteering with Repair Cafe Northern Ireland, helping people restore cherished items and save them money across six locations.
The numbers speak for themselves: Repair Cafe NI has mended over 3,500 items and saved 7.5 tonnes from landfill. Brendan gets a buzz bringing sentimental pieces back to life like a handmade cigarette dispenser crafted in a POW camp. "When I repair something, I get euphoria," he says. "Seeing the delight on someone's face when something broken for years is fixed. that's a dream come true for them."
In a throwaway culture, Brendan's the reminder we need that some things are worth saving. He's passed his skills to his three sons and wants to inspire younger generations to value repair over replacement. At 81, he's just completed his 52nd parkrun and has no plans to slow down.

Halt Cafe — Beersbridge Road

What we had at Halt Cafe, Beersbridge road
"You need to try the almond croissant at Halt, they're really out of this world."
These words from my wife's colleague sent us straight to this wee cosy spot on Beersbridge Road on Sunday morning. Packed with a cheerful bunch of patrons, we squeezed into two free spots, eager to see what the rave was about and in truth, they didn’t disappoint.
What we had: The Eggs on Rosti, honestly the best potato rosti we've had in a while. Came with beautifully poached eggs, with avocado and chive. Oh and the legendary almond croissants will surely be bringing me back to Halt for sure. From the size to the fillings, every bite was an absolute delight.
The vibe: Warm, bustling, proper Sunday breakfast energy
Price range: ££ (Mains £8-12, croissants £3.50)
