THE DIGEST: Belfast in Brief
Only the good news, promise.
✈️ Who knew Queen's and Rolls-Royce have been working together for 26 years
There's a decent chance you've walked past Queen's and had no idea that people there have been working with Rolls-Royce for 26 years.
That relationship has now become a new University Technology Partnership, bringing together work in aerospace, engine modelling and simulation, and cybersecurity. It also opens up more opportunities for students to work alongside one of the world's biggest aerospace companies, with the partnership linking into Belfast's Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre too.

🚶 Belfast might be a bit more walkable than we think
Here's one for anyone who regularly declares Belfast "impossible to get around."
People living in Northern Ireland's urban areas made an average of 226 walking journeys in 2024, compared with 162 for people in rural areas. They spent around 80 hours walking across the year too, nearly double the 56 hours recorded by rural residents.
Then comes the flip side. Rural residents travelled an average of 7,326 miles during the year, compared with 4,352 for urban residents. When everything's a bit further away, the car starts clocking up more mileage.
Cars still account for 69% of journeys across Northern Ireland, but walking makes up almost a quarter of all trips.
Maybe we're not doing quite so badly on foot.

🏠 Remember our Belfast rent reality check?
Back in December, we looked at the rather grim reality of renting in Belfast, after the Financial Times reported that rents here were rising faster than anywhere else in the UK.
At the time, we heard about a one-bed in Ballyhackamore going from £550 in 2020 to £725, before the landlord decided to sell.
Now there’s another piece of the housing puzzle getting a closer look.
Belfast City Council has launched a 12-week consultation on short-term lets, covering everything from serviced apartments and apart-hotels to holiday lets. The council says they can bring more accommodation and support tourism, but also recognises the potential impact on the availability of homes and the character of neighbourhoods.
So, the question is becoming a slightly awkward one for Belfast:
How do we welcome more visitors without making it even harder for people who actually live here to find somewhere to live?
The consultation is open until 16 November.

Openings, Closures & Buzz Around Town
🥐 Bread Street Bakery is taking over Belfast, one café at a time
Bread Street Bakery is opening two more Belfast locations, taking the homegrown café business to five sites across the city.
The fourth is coming to Lisburn Road, while a fifth is planned for the new Loftlines development in Titanic Quarter by the end of the year.
Not bad for a business that started out in the Great Northern Mall in 2023.
If you keep seeing that Bread Street sign popping up around Belfast, you're not imagining it.

💷 Got a community project? There’s £5k up for grabs
Belfast Harbour has opened the second round of its 2026 Community Awards, with grants of up to £5,000 available to eligible grass roots and charitable organisations.
The money can support things like employability and skills, environmental projects and community support.
Applications close Friday 25 September at 5pm.
One for the community groups quietly making things happen across Belfast.

🏦 Vault is going back to East
The artist-led organisation has announced its return to East Belfast, taking over the former Masonic Lodge on the lower Newtownards Road as its new home.
The announcement from their website reads: “We are delighted to announce Vault’s return to east Belfast and our new home in the former Masonic Lodge on the lower Newtownards Road.”
We’ll be keeping an eye on what happens here.

🍽️ Foodie Spotlight
The Chef Fregz Dinner Table
We promised you last week we'd be talking about this and we weren't exaggerating. The Chef Fregz Dinner Table finally happened, and it was every bit as good as the hype.
Chef Fregz brought a proper Nigerian feast to Belfast, with Iru Chicken Salad, Suya Confit Duck Leg, Crayfish Tempura Bass, Lamb Neck Asun, and Uyayak Ice Cream making their way around the tables. That's the sort of menu that makes "come for dinner" sound like a bit of an understatement.
Bold flavours, plenty to talk about, and a room full of people who'd mostly never met each other before sitting down together and forming great connections and friendships. That was probably our favourite bit.
Heather who had never tried Nigerian food said it wasn’t just the food that was the highlight but the warmness and the people.
We’ll drop official moments soon but meanwhile, enjoy the teaser.
🚲 As Spotted
Belfast has a bike club. Apparently nobody told us.
We spotted a group of cyclists making their way around Belfast this week, and it got us thinking about just how many little communities and clubs are quietly doing their thing around the city.
Not everything happening in Belfast gets a billboard.
Sometimes it's just a load of people on bikes, heading off somewhere together.
